PHILADELPHIA, PA – The seizure of a shipment of counterfeit smartphone digitizers by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers. The shipment contained 648 fake Samsung digitizers and was headed to an address west of Chicago from Austria. CBP officers initially inspected the shipment and discovered that the digitizers were counterfeit. They then submitted the documentation and photographs to CBP’s trade experts, who verified that the goods were not authentic. The counterfeit digitizers were valued at $128,952 if they were genuine.
CBP is committed to protecting American consumers by intercepting counterfeit and pirated goods through their Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) enforcement program. The international trade in counterfeit consumer goods is illegal and can steal revenue from trademark holders, steal tax revenue from the government, fund transnational criminal organizations, and pose a threat to the health and safety of American consumers.
In Fiscal Year 2022, CBP officers and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents seized over 20,812 shipments containing IPR-violating goods, which equates to nearly 25 million counterfeit goods. The estimated manufacturer’s suggested retail price of the seized goods was over $2.98 billion (USD). Additionally, HSI special agents arrested 255 individuals and obtained 95 convictions related to intellectual property crimes in 2022.
