BECKLEY, WV – Rana Zeeshan Tanveer, a 42-year-old resident of Beckley, has pleaded guilty to committing an export fraud violation. Tanveer admitted to knowingly submitting false export valuations for two high-technology devices that he shipped to Pakistan. According to court documents and statements made in court, Tanveer ordered the two items in May 2017, paying more than $4,000 for both. He then created a false invoice that intentionally understated the value of the items as less than $200 and used it to ship the items to Pakistan using a freight forwarding service in July 2017. Tanveer also admitted to using false invoices on at least six other occasions from 2014 to 2018, undervaluing U.S.-origin technology that he exported to Pakistan.

Federal law requires the filing of accurate Electronic Export Information (EEI) through the Automated Export System (AES) about certain items that are exported from the United States. It is a federal crime to knowingly submit false or misleading Electronic Export Information. Tanveer faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine. He is scheduled to be sentenced on August 4, 2023.

The United States Department of Commerce Office of Export Enforcement (OEE) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) conducted the investigation. The announcement was made by United States Attorney Will Thompson, who commended the investigative work of OEE and FBI. OEE Washington Field Office Acting Special Agent in Charge Scott Anderson and FBI Pittsburgh Special Agent in Charge Mike Nordwall both stated their commitment to working together to prevent and disrupt illicit trade that threatens U.S. national security and undermines U.S. foreign policy.
