TRENTON, NJ- New Jersey lawmakers, parents, and mental health experts gathered for a hearing on teen suicides in Trenton to learn about ways to prevent them. The Senate Education Committee heard testimony from nearly a dozen speakers on the need for mental health resources to support young people.

The speakers discussed the importance of schools in providing a sense of belonging and purpose to prevent suicides, and highlighted the need for continued resources to address the issue. The hearing also revealed the extent of the crisis, with an increase in pediatric visits for mental health by nearly 50% and frequent interventions by school staff to prevent suicides. The state lawmakers plan to use the testimony to draft legislation and increase funding for mental health resources.
