New Jersey has seen a massive surge in flu-related emergency room visits and admissions in recent weeks as the state continues to battle one of the worst flu seasons in years, experts say.
There have been 7,300 confirmed influenza cases so far this season– about 3,100 more than during the same period last year–with one death from a flu-related illness, according to the latest data from the state Department of Health.
And, emergency room visits and admissions in New Jersey have surpassed the three highest flu seasons ever recorded in the state, as patients continue to flood clinics and emergency rooms, putting some at full capacity.
All counties in New Jersey are considered to be at high flu levels, and that trend is expected to continue for weeks to come, according to Jackie Cornell, New Jersey’s principal deputy commissioner of health, who received a flu shot at an event in New Brunswick Wednesday afternoon to encourage the public to also get vaccinated.
Though the entire state is experiencing high levels, some counties are faring worse than others. Here’s a breakdown of how each of the state’s 21 counties are managing with this season’s severe flu.
