LOMBARD, IL – What better way to tell stories of cultures and generations than through a museum! The National Indo-American Museum, which aims to showcase the diverse stories of Indian Americans, was inaugurated recently at the Umang and Paragi Patel Center in Lombard, Illinois.
Founding members, board members, major donors, supporters, prominent state officials gathered at the museum for a preview prior to the museum’s official opening on Oct. 16.
President Deven Kane heralded the festivities. He thanked NIAM’s major donors, Dr. Umang and Paragi Patel, for their generous gift of the building. A long-time supporter of the museum, Umang spoke of the significance of the moment and NIAM’s journey in reaching this milestone, the news release said.
Also speaking at the event was Consul General of India in Chicago Amit Kumar, joined by his wife Surabhi Kumar. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi shared encouraging remarks about the relevance of organizations like NIAM. Shaurya Kumar, chair of the faculty and associate professor at the School of the Art Institute Chicago talked about the museum’s opening exhibition, E/Merge: Art of the Indian Diaspora, made possible with major funding from the National Endowment for the Arts
