It’s no news that the advent of digital platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram has given the power to nameless and faceless trolls to spew hate and negativity online. And it is high time that new ground rules are set to prevent such online hatred based on religion, gender and caste etc. Popular figures often become victims of such trolling but it becomes extremely problematic and disturbing when their children are dragged into controversies related to them.
Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma’s daughter Vamika was recently given rape threats after Virat recently backed his teammate, pacer Mohammed Shami during an interview. Virat was responding to the religious abuse he had received on social media after Pakistan had defeated India in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
In a press conference, Virat had said, “To me, attacking someone over their religion is the most pathetic thing that a human being can do. Everyone has the right to voice their opinion over what they feel about a certain situation, but I personally have never ever even thought of discriminating (against) anyone over their religion. That’s a very sacred and personal thing to every human being. People take out their frustrations because they obviously have no understanding of what we do as individuals. They have no understanding of how much effort we put into the field. They have no understanding of the fact that someone like Shami has won India a number of matches in the last few years and he has been our primary bowler with Jasprit Bumrah when it comes to making an impact in games. If people can overlook that and his passion for his country, honestly, I don’t even want to waste one minute of my life to give any attention to those people, and neither does Shami and neither does anyone else in the team. We stand by him fully. We are backing him 200 percent, and all those who have attacked him can come with more force if they want to. Our brotherhood, our friendship within the team, nothing can be shaken.”
It’s disturbing to even learn about how low these trolls can stoop, threatening to rape a toddler just because her father is a captain of Indian Cricket Team. We strongly condemn such trolls or people who don’t know where to draw the line.
Anushka is heartbroken and angry like any mother would be. A source close to the actress told BollywoodLife, “As a celeb in the public eye, Anushka has built an immunity to all the trolling and negativity. She is anyway a very strong woman to get affected by what faceless people say. But this time, it has gone too far and too low. Anushka and Virat too are active on social media and they know what is being said about their daughter. Anushka has been heartbroken seeing the comments. She is feeling rage as well like any mother would.”
The source added, “She is enraged yes, but knowing her, she will shut all this out and go on using social media as usual. It is also the festive season and she doesn’t want all this tasteless abuse to kill the good vibes.”
People on social media also found it disturbing and are bashing the person behind that nasty troll. The identity is yet to be verified.
Here’s how people reacted:
In the notice issued to the Deputy Commissioner of Delhi Police Cyber Crime Branch, the DCW has demanded that immediate action be taken against the online troll. Taking suo moto cognizance of the threats, DCW stated, “It has been reported that online threats are being given to rape the nine months old girl child of Virat Kohli since the team’s defeat in the recent India Pakistan cricket match. It is learnt that he is being also attacked since he spoke against the incessant trolling of his teammate Md Shami who was targeted for his religion by online trolls,” it added.
