Mercedes To Bring in Locally Assembled EQS To India

The EQS is Mercedes’ first all-electric luxury sedan and it features all the comfort creatures you can think of and an impressive range

Mercedes-Benz India shared some pretty exciting news during its annual conference today. The German automaker will be bringing the Maybach and the luxury EV sedan EQS to India this year. But we’re more excited about the latter, which will be locally assembled at its Chakan factory, to keep the costs down.

The EQS is the German brand’s first all-electric luxury sedan. Mercedes will offer the EV in two variants — the EQS 450+ and the EQS 580 4MATIC, both come with a claimed range of 770km.

Mercedes claims, “The EQS can be charged with up to 200 kW at fast-charging stations with direct current. Power for up to another 300 kilometres (WLTP) is recharged in just 15 minutes.”

While it is still unclear which model Mercedes plans to bring here, it did confirm that we’ll see it hitting the streets by the fourth quarter of this year.

Called the ‘S Cass of EVs,’ the EQS comes with a host of comfort creatures you’d expect from a luxury sedan, and that includes a drool-worthy 55.5-inch display called MBUX hyper screen, which could put any Teslas to shame.

The ‘hyper screen’ consists of two 12.3-inch screens and a 17.7-inch centre touchscreen infotainment system placed close to each other under a cover glass. Mercedes claims this gives the impression of the screens being “merged together.” We’ll have to check that out in person.

Additionally, the MBUS infotainment system will feature voice control, which can be operated from any seat in the EQS. But what truly makes it futuristic are the nifty little touches in the sedan. For example, there’s a whole array of cameras and sensors which monitor occupants. If the camera detects that the driver is looking at the front passenger display, it automatically dims any background lights.

Passengers are shown some love too. With individual1.6-inch screens mounted on the front seat headrests and an optional tablet. Then there’s a 15-speaker, 710W Burmester sound system setup, along with climate control and an ambience pack, which lets you customise sound, the lighting and even aroma.

Does the EQS have the potential to be the most luxurious EV sedan in India? Maybe. However, the skeptic in us still wants to see how it’ll perform against the Audi e-Tron GT and the upcoming Porsche Taycan.

Sounds pretty exciting, right? But that’s not it. Mercedes-Benz India has over 10 launches scheduled for this year, including the Maybach S-Class which will debut in March.
