Medical imaging expert honored

ORLANDO,FL — Baba Vemuri, an Indian American professor at the University of Florida, was named among the eight recipients of the 2017 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society Award.

Vemuri was named a recipient of the Technical Achievement Award, for which four people were named.

The award is given to an individual for pioneering and sustaining contributions to computer vision and medical image analysis.

Vemuri is a professor at the university’s department of computer and information sciences.

He received his doctorate at the University of Texas at Austin, and has research interests that include medical image computing, computer vision, machine learning and information geometry.

A fellow of the IEEE and ACM, Vemuri has published more than 190 refereed journal and conference articles and received several best paper awards.

Vemuri has also served as a program Chair and area Chair of several IEEE conferences, was an associate editor of several area journals and is currently an associate editor of the Journal of Medical Image Analysis and the International Journal of Computer Vision.

The other awards include the CSEU Teaching Award, the Taylor L. Booth Education Award, the Richard E. Merwin Service Award and the Harlan D. Mills Award.

The award winners will be honored at the 2017 IEEE Computer Society Awards ceremony in Phoenix, Ariz on June 14.
