CHICAGO, IL- Mayor Lori Lightfoot of Chicago is raising concerns about a new wave of migrants expected to be sent to cities across the country, including Chicago, by Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s administration. In a letter to Abbott, Lightfoot calls his actions inhumane and dangerous and urges him to halt the plan, which is set to start as early as Monday. The city of Chicago has already taken in over 8,000 migrants since August, which has depleted its resources, making it impossible to accommodate any more migrants.

Lightfoot is offering to work with Abbott to find a solution to the crisis and is calling for humanity to be restored in the midst of the political sparring. She acknowledges the overwhelming situation at the borders but believes that simply sending migrants to cities without any resources or plan in place is not the solution. The mayor has not received a response from Governor Abbott after sending the letter and does not expect to hear from him.

The migrant crisis has put a strain on city agencies and local volunteer organizations, with housing being a top issue for many migrants. Overcrowded shelters have led families to seek refuge at police stations, further exacerbating the situation. The situation could spiral out of control nationwide as the pandemic era policy, Title 42, which allows border officials to expel migrants without considering their asylum claims, is set to expire.
