PITTSBURG, CA — Rathnesh Raman, a longtime veteran of the Pittsburg, Calif., Police Department, has been hired as the police chief of the San Pablo Police Department in San Pablo, Calif.
Raman, who also serves as a part-time Los Medanos Community College instructor, will be sworn in on August 30.
The Indian American is a 21-year veteran of the Pittsburg Police Department. He was chosen from 31 other applicants, according to San Pablo city manager Matt Rodriguez.
Raman will be San Pablo’s first male minority chief since the city’s incorporation in 1948.
Concord resident Raman, father of two children, graduated from Pinole Valley High School in 1991 and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from California State University Sacramento, and a master’s degree in leadership from St. Mary’s College.
Raman, who joined the Pittsburg police force in 2004, became captain in 2014.
