MANASSAS, VA- Ranjith Varma, 55 yrs, from Manassas, Virginia met a tragic end while attempting to hike from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon to the North Rim in a single day.

Varma was accompanied by six other hikers. At about 1.55 pm according to reports as appeared in Arizona Daily Sun, Varma became unresponsive while his fellow hikers tried and initiated CPR. An emergency call was made to the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center of a hiker in distress. Specialized helicopter maneuver were used to reach the stee terrain. However, attempts to resuscitate Varma failed.

It wasn’t immediately clear if his death was heat related. An investigation was being conducted by the Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner.
