New Delhi, March 9: Formed on the lines of Australia's Women's Big Bash League (WBBL), the upcoming Women's Cricket League (WCL#T20) — a first of its kind in India — had its logo unveiled here on the occasion of International Women's Day.

Besides the logo, the tournament's website was also launched on Wednesday, which will start free registration from potential women players from Thursday.

Unveiling the logo, WCL Managing Partner Vandana Thakur said: "Women cricketers are yet to become household names in a cricket-crazy country like India. WCL will provide women cricket players a much needed opportunity to step out of the shadows, participate in national and international tournaments and leagues to showcase their talent and receive the fame they deserve."

Elaborating on the structure of the WCL, founder Parul Jain said: "WCL will scout hidden talent from schools and colleges in small towns and cities in India, international clubs and even non-cricket playing countries."

The league will have eight teams, formed of players from various club teams and inter-college cricket tournaments. The final teams will be revealed on the tournament's website.

Commenting on the selection procedure, WCL Managing Partner Pooja Sharma said: "All registered candidates will go through a selection process and trials by some of the most eminent sports personalities. The final list of selected players will be trained under the watchful eyes of renowned coaches."

"We will provide coaching and mentorship in addition to the best professional quality training. WCL will strive to create professionals and take them to the highest pedestal."

As a first in the series of activities for WCL's talent hunt programme, one team each from Gargi college, Lakshmibai college, Bharti College, KLM Dayanand college, Jesus & Mary College and Kamla Nehru College of Delhi University will play an inter-college tournament, starting on Friday at Gargi College.
