ICE Deportations of Undocumented Immigrants With Criminal Records Decreasing Significantly Under Biden Administration.
HI INDIA NEWS DESK
Data released by the Biden administration shows a significant drop in the number of convicted criminal illegal immigrants deported by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with officials lowering targets for years to come. In fiscal year 2020, the Trump administration aimed to deport 151,000 convicted criminal illegal immigrants, but only deported just over 100,000. In fiscal year 2021, the target was 97,440, but just 39,149 were removed.
The agency has now lowered the targets for fiscal years 2023 and 2024 to just 29,393 deportations for each year. ICE attributed the drop in numbers to policy changes by the Biden administration, the COVID-19 pandemic, and ICE resources being diverted to assist Customs and Border Protection at the southern border.
The continued targeting of fewer than 30,000 criminal illegal immigrants is likely to fuel criticism from immigration hawks over the Biden administration’s policies. ICE also plans to reduce the average daily population of adults in detention and scale down its use of Alternatives to Detention.
