Here’s why cracked screen of iPhone 13 can’t be repaired by your neighborhood store

Hyderabad: If you have bought the recently launched iPhone 13 then there seems to be another big worry for you. If by any chance you drop your phone and the screen gets cracked then you will not be able to get it repaired from your neighborhood repair shop or get help from your tech friend.

You will have to shell out more money and get it repaired only at an authorized Apple repair centre or be prepared to lose out on the Face ID functionality.

As per a report by iFixit, the new iPhone 13 completely disables its flagship Face ID functionality when you replace its screen. “This is a dark day for fixers, both DIY and professionals. One of the most common phone repairs that could once be done with hand tools now requires a microscope. This means you won’t be able to fix your iPhone screen yourself without sacrificing major functionality,” the report says.

The iFixit report mentions that this is happening because Apple has built a chip about the size of Tic-Tac tucked into the bottom of a screen and the iPhone 13 is paired to its screen using this small microcontroller.

Apple has not provided a way for owners or independent shops to pair a new screen and only authorized technicians with access to Apple’s proprietary software can make new screens work by logging the repair to Apple’s cloud servers and syncing the serial numbers of the phone and screen. “This gives Apple the ability to approve or deny each individual repair,” it says.

In the US, an out-of-warranty screen repair of the iPhone 13 Pro Max is $329 (about Rs 25,000) and iPhone 13 Mini is $229 (about Rs 17,000) and as per some reports in India the repair costs could be higher when compared with the cost in the US.
