New Delhi, Oct 24 (IANS) A member of the infamous "Gulel" gang has been arrested in connection with a series of thefts in the capital, police said on Saturday.

The gang is known for using children to check parked cars, break the windows with a catapult and then walk away with the valuables kept inside them.

Kanhiya Lal, 23, a resident of Madangir near Ambedkar Nagar in south Delhi, was arrested from south Delhi’s R.K. Puram area on October 14.

"He (Lal) along with his associates committed dozens of incidents of stealing from cars in Delhi using catapults and minor children," Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Prem Nath said.

With his arrest, Nath said, police have worked out two incidents of theft in the adjoining areas of R.K. Puram in south Delhi.

"During investigation Lal confessed to be involved in around 25 theft cases but so far only two have been worked out," Nath said, adding, "Further investigations are in progress."

Nath said the gang is infamous for its unique modus operandi in which they involve minor children for reconnaissance of cars parked near the shopping malls and other public areas.

"After reconnaissance, the gang members use Gulel (catapult) from a distance to break the car’s window glass and walk away with the expensive items like laptop, stereo etc," Nath said.
