Griezmann helps Atletico gain ground in La Liga

Madrid, Dec 3: A late winner from Frenchman Antoine Griezmann capped off Atletico Madrid's 2-1 comeback victory over Real Sociedad and moved the team closer to La Liga-leading FC Barcelona.

Atletico looked nothing like the team that demolished Levante last weekend and went down 1-0 at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium when Willian Jose converted a penalty for Real Sociedad in the 29th minute on Saturday, reports Efe. 

The Colchoneros, however, stepped up their intensity from that point forward, with Filipe Luis drawing the teams level in the 63rd minute and Griezmann notching the winner in the 88th minute.

Real Sociedad was the better team in the opening minutes, with Willian Jose firing a shot over the crossbar and Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak making a foot save on a shot by Xabi Prieto.

However, Oblak fouled Mikel Oyarzabal inside the area, prompting a penalty that was converted by Willian Jose.

But that goal was a turning point for Atletico, which reacted immediately to set up two scoring chances that Angel Correa was unable to convert.

Atletico kept pushing after the break, with Correa firing very high from close range amid other missed chances by the host.

Despite putting on a poor performance during the match, Ñiguez shone when it mattered most to set up Filipe Luis for the tying goal in the 63rd minute.

Following that score, both teams went on the attack in a bid for the three points.

The visitors threatened Oblak's goal more than once, while Atletico made two attacking changes, with Fernando Torres and Yannick Carrasco entering the game to give their team a boost.

Real Sociedad goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli managed to preserve the tie by saving a pair of chances by Griezmann and Torres.

But with two minutes to go before stoppage time, Griezmann completed a play that had been set up by a Ñiguez header to clinch a hard-fought victory.
