Gold Nuggets and Bars Valued at $67,830 Seized by Cincinnati CBP

CINCINNATI, OH—On March 9, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized an outbound shipment of clothing at the Port of Cincinnati after discovering it also contained loose gold and gold bars worth far more than the declared value of $125 USD.

The shipment originated from San Francisco and was headed for Hong Kong. CBP officers selected the shipment for an x-ray exam, which revealed density anomalies. They then found four gold bars and a box of loose gold concealed within articles of clothing. CBP’s Laboratories and Scientific Services confirmed the gold was approximately 98% pure, leading import specialists to assess the value of the shipment at $67,830. CBP reminds exporters that failing to file or filing misleading export information can result in civil or criminal penalties and prosecution..
