TALLAHASSEE, FL- Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida is proposing a comprehensive anti-illegal immigration bill that aims to increase penalties for human smuggling and falsifying documents, require state employers to verify employee legal status, track healthcare spending on illegal immigrants, and invalidate out-of-state IDs for illegal immigrants.

The proposal is being led by Florida state senator Blaise Ingoglia and is being billed as the largest, most comprehensive state-led anti-illegal immigration bill ever passed in the US. The bill aims to protect Floridians from the dangers of the border crisis and to track the amount of money being spent on healthcare for illegal immigrants. If the bill passes, hospitals that receive state Medicaid dollars will be required to ask patients about their legal status.

The cost of healthcare for illegal immigrants in Florida last fiscal year was over $310 million. Over 1.1 million driver’s licenses have been given to illegal migrants in California since 2014, according to state data. Additionally, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law in September allowing illegal immigrants to get state IDs.
