Ravindra Jadeja was single handedly responsible for churning out a million emotions out of each and every Team India fan that was watching helplessly as New Zealand inched closer towards becoming the first ever World Test Champions.

On Day 6 of the WTC final, Mohammed Shami was in the middle of the innings’ 23rd over when Black Caps legend Ross Taylor was on strike and powerfully cut the delivery. However the ball raced towards Jadeja, who was standing at gully, while bouncing once before going into his hands.

The India all-rounder, who is also considered to be one of the finest fielders in international cricket threw the ball in the air as soon as he got his hands on it – a common celebration for fielders for when they catch the ball and dismiss a batsman.

For a moment, Southampton’s Ageas Bowl echoed multiple “ooh’s and aah’s” and even the commentators felt that it Taylor would have to walk back to the pavilion. Jadeja however, quickly threw the ball back towards Shami, with a cheeky smile on his face.

All-time great, Sunil Gavskar was in the commentary box alongside Simon Doull and immediately asked whether Jadeja’s theatrics would be considered as “fake fielding”.

“Does it come under fielding? 5 penalty runs?” Gavaskar asked, although in a jovial tone before being quickly and hilarious cut off by Doull stating that even the commentary that they were doing was fake considering even they believed that the Kiwi’s wicket had fallen.

Here’s how the fans reacted to this moment:

Ravi Jadeja faked all cricket fans, I thought it was catch.

The inaugural edition of the World Test Championships brought sweet redemption to Kane Williamson who was finally able to book an ICC title under his name especially after facing a huge and rather controversial upset back in 2019 when they lost the World Cup against England by 0 runs.

For Virat Kohli, the drought continues as he still remains a title-less captain of the Indian cricket team despite leading the squad in multiple ICC tournaments but struggling to make it through the knockout stages or the finals and bagging an ICC trophy.

New Zealand ended up winning the one-off Test by 8 wickets while successfully chasing India’s 139-run total in the second innings with 43 balls to spare.
