Euphoria’s Palash Sen Compares Today’s Music With ‘Condoms’, Says It Isn’t About Talent

Every 90s kid has grown up listening to the hit numbers by the most popular pop rock music band of India, Euphoria. The boy band shaped the Indian music industry with songs like ‘Maeri’ and ‘Kabhi Aana Tu Meri Gali’ that are still timeless and make us tap our feet to the rhythm even today. That was definitely some good music that is hard to find today.

The lead singer of the band, Palash Sen also thinks the same. In fact, he is disappointed with today’s music and what the system of commercialisation has made it. “You go buy it, use it and throw it,” he said, comparing it with condoms in the sense that songs today are just meant to generate views and money and aren’t worthy of being classic anymore. Can’t say we disagree.

Apart from the fact that it is coming from the OG music maven of India, this does make sense.  He further explained, “If you can buy a radio spot, Facebook ads, radio ads, media space, you can be way ahead of somebody who actually had a better song. That is something of great worry.”

“Why do you think India has only Bollywood music? It is because Bollywood has the maximum money, they have the money to push it and buy things, Eventually, it is not good music but the only music you get. It is actually a very big worry,” he added.

He said that the music composers are making songs that sound similar and it has all come down to one thing–views which are often even paid.

“Even the songs being made, they all sound the same. Koi farak hi nahi hai! (There is no difference). It is all about the number of views, 500 million and what not. How these 500 and 800 millions views are happening, we all know, it is all about money. Recently, one artist, I won’t name them, spent 25 lakhs on the first day of the song. It is a sad state of affairs,” he said.

He said that music is not about talent or merit anymore because everything from advertising to views are bought. “Somebody else, who might have a better song which should reach the people, will never reach them, and some crap will. Advertising space has been bought. The problem is, I might be sounding like a prude or a very traditional guy… but I eventually feel things like music, writing books, art, are sacrosanct,” he said.

Palash Sen-led Euphoria released their latest album after nine long years. It is titled ‘Sale’. Although the band has done a few gigs, singles and collaborations in the past years, this is their first album since ‘Sharnaagat’ released in 2012.
