Srinagar, April 25 (IANS) A high-level team of the Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday reviewed preparedness for the Anantnag parliamentary by-poll and assessed the security situation through video-conferencing.
"Deputy Election Commissioners Umesh Sinha and Sandeep Saxena, besides Director of EC Secretariat Nikhil Kumar, were briefed by J&K Chief Electoral Officer Shantmanu, Divisional Commissioner (Kashmir) Baseer Khan, senior police and paramilitary officers and the District Election Officers concerned about the by-poll preparedness and security situation in south Kashmir," an official statement said here.
"The Chief Electoral Officer also held a detailed meeting with the representatives of political parties, contesting candidates, and officers of police and other security agencies, in which District Election Officers and SSPs of Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam districts participated through video-conferencing," it said.
The meeting held discussions on security situation and other related issues regarding the conduct of Anantnag by-polls, the statement added.
While the by-poll is scheduled for May 25, the state government has sought its deferment because of the deteriorating security situation in the Kashmir Valley.
