Warangal: The difficulties and hardships faced by a boy during childhood have prompted him to choose the path of serving the poor and needy. He believed that good education could only help him to become successful in life. The man in question is Mandala Parashuramulu, former chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), erstwhile Warangal district.

Parashuramalu, who is founder and chief functionary of Abhyudaya Seva Samithi, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), is helping the poor, especially orphans, semi-orphans and women, through his NGOs.

“I was born into a lower middle class family at Rangasaipet locality in Warangal city. While my father worked in the then Azam Jahi cotton mills, my mother worked as a beedi roller. Since we owned no assets, I faced many difficulties and hardships in my childhood. I too worked as a beedi roller to chip into the family income, while I was attending school. However, I decided to pursue higher studies as I felt education is the only solution to overcome the difficulties of life. I also joined the Bharat Scouts and Guides movement during the school days where I learned the importance of discipline and dedication in life,” he told Telangana Today.

Inspired by eminent doctors and social activists from Warangal, Dr Dharmapuri Sampath Rajaram, and Dr Geetha Sampath, Parashuramulu started to serve the needy since his school days and received the President Scout Award by the then president Giani Zail Singh in 1985.

He received the State Youth Award in 1991 and also got National Youth Award in 1997 through the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India (GoI). In 1996, he received the Nikhil Koithara Award for Literacy work through the International Youth Center, New Delhi.

Parashuramulu is a triple postgraduate. He did MA Public administration, MA Sociology and Master of Social Work (MSW) besides Bachelor of Law (BL), and Diploma in Civil Engineering

He served as a national service volunteer in Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK), Warangal, and also Literacy coordinator for the ‘Akshara Deepika’ programme in the erstwhile Warangal besides serving as the Juvenile Justice Board member for 10 years. As a chairperson, Child Welfare Committee (CWC), erstwhile Warangal, for three years, he helped many children to get proper care and protection by coordinating with all the line departments. He resolved many children’s issues without any delay. For this service, he received accolades from the district administration. He served as a member of many district level committees.

“Now, I’m focusing on the care and protection of the orphan and semi orphan children as well as better agricultural practices, formation of youth saving groups ,health promotion activities, watershed development, plastic ban besides taking part in other social service activities,” Parashuramulu said. He was selected for the international youth exchange programme and visited Srilanka and Canada in 1999. “Commitment and hard work pays off,” Parashuramulu added.
