Curbs on tobacco products reasonable: Telangana HC

Hyderabad: A two-judge panel of Telangana High Court comprising Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice A Rajasekhar Reddy dismissed a batch of writ petitions challenging a notification issued by the government in banning/restricting sale of gutka and other tobacco products across the State. The panel observed that a similar question was dealt by Mumbai High Court, holding that though public interest is at large, Food Safety Act overrides other laws. The panel held that the “restrictions imposed by the State is in order to save human life which is already facing Covid pandemic situation and people are suffering from cancer and other diseases”. It further observed that reasonable restrictions in no way offend the right to carry on trade guaranteed under the Constitution.

Case against Hetero Drugs

Justice Shameem Akhter of Telangana High Court on Tuesday refused to quash criminal case against Hetero Drugs and its Managing Director M Srinivas Reddy in a CBI case against Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy. The petitioner filed an application to quash the criminal case against him. It was contended unsuccessfully before the court that the decision of allotment of land was strictly in accordance with law and no favours were either received or given. It was also contended that the petitioner was caught in a political crossfire. The judge opined that the various allegations required to be tried in a full-fledged trial and the matter cannot be quashed at this stage.
