Cook County Animal Control Provides Winter Safety Advice for Pets Amidst Freezing Temperatures

HI INDIA NEWS DESK
CHICAGO, IL- Dangerously low temperatures are expected, with snowstorms transitioning to subzero conditions this weekend, posing risks to residents and pets. The Cook County Department of Animal and Rabies Control advises:

• Bring pets indoors: Provide indoor heated shelters for dogs and cats during sub-zero weather.

• Salt and ice precautions: Use foot coverings for pets or wash their paws with warm water post-walks to avoid irritation.

• Frostbite prevention: Limit outdoor exposure for pets; if signs of frostbite appear, consult a veterinarian immediately.

• Leash and identification: Keep pets leashed due to snow disguising scents; ensure collars have updated contact details and microchipping.

• Visibility in the dark: Wear reflective gear during evening walks to enhance visibility.

• Secure toxic materials: Store antifreeze safely, as it’s harmful to animals.

• Emergency preparedness: Create a pet-inclusive emergency plan with essentials like food, water, and medication for at least five days.

For wild animals:
• Honk before driving: Alert animals, seeking warmth, by honking before starting your car.

• Contact officials: If wild animals enter your property, notify local authorities for safe removal.
Residents are reminded to report pets left outdoors in severe cold and ensure their safety in line with local laws and regulations.
