Belgrade : A 4,000-year-old Bronze Age necropolis has been unearthed in Serbia.

It was discovered during a road construction work outside Vranje town, some 270 km from Belgrade, Xinhua reported Saturday.

The site contains the remains of people burned in funeral pyres, said Aleksandar Bulatovic, coordinator of archeological research and preservation.

“The necropolis dates back to the early Bronze Age.

“Based on our initial assessments, it is between 2,000 and 1,800 B.C.

“It is significant because it is the only fully reserved necropolis from this period in the central Balkans,” said Bulatovic.

The site also revealed a number of ceramic objects and containers whose use is not yet known.

“It is the most important discovery made to date on the Corridor 10 route,” Bulatovic said.

The findings will be displayed at the National Museum in Vranje.
