Bal Vihar Celebrates India’s 71st Republic Day

Performance by Bal Vihar Choir & Orchestra team

ST LOUIS, MO -Bal Vihar of St. Louis celebrated India’s 71st Republic Day with great enthusiasm on January 26, 2020 at Hindu Temple Community Center at St. Louis, Missouri. More than 400 audiences were in attendance include students, their parents and our esteemed guests.

Students from 2nd through 7th grade showcased Bal Vihar 2020 Republic Day Theme – “Festivals of India”. Each class picked some of the festivals that they can cover. The primary emphasis was to included as many festivals as possible and showcase some lesser known festivals that primarily have regional significance.

Kindergarten and 1st grade students and teachers had something totally different on their mind. Our youngest students in Kindergarten walked on the staged dressed in beautiful Indian attire. All of them walked to the center of the stage and proudly announced what state/region that their parents or ancestors are from. 1st graders put together a splendid display by dressing up as characters from Indian mythology. It was such a delightful treat to witness these younger ones walked across the stage.

The event started with our honorable guests judging classes in the group that they were assigned to. Judges got to talk to the students and understood what efforts had been put together. They asked the students questions on how they went about their research and what they learnt in the process. Judges evaluated the display put up by the students in the categories of “most informative”, “most creative”, “best attitude”. There was also an overall winner in each of the groups. The results were announced at the end of the day.

After the judging of class displays, the event moved to the next phase that included flag hoisting followed by a beautiful performance by Bal Vihar Orchestra playing the national anthem of United States and Republic of India. It was great to see our young students delivering a fabulous performance with very limited practice. After the anthems, Bal Vihar selected choir students sang one of Mahatma Gandhi’s favorite hymns – “Vaishnao Jana to…” accompanied by Bal VIhar youth orchestra accompanying them.

In attendance were leaders from the local Indian community that were joined by our guests from St. Louis Mosaic Project, St. Louis Science Center and Interfaith Partnership. The guests were recognized honored by Bal Vihar during the event. St. Louis Post Dispatch staff was in attendance to cover the event.
