Indian minister meets Chicago’s community leaders

CHICAGO, IL — India’s Union Minister of State for Tourism, Culture, Electronics & Information Technology, K J Alphon, met with Chicago’s community figures at a Breakfast Reception hosted by Consul General of India Neeta Bhushan in partnership with Dr. Bharat Barai on June 21.

After the minister had expressed his keen desire to meet Indian Diaspora, Dr. Barai convened a welcome reception in partnership with Bhushan and the two were joined by a few community figures, including Keerthi Kumar Ravoori, Sunil Shah, Nirav Patel and Dr. Vijay Prabhakar.

At the reception, discussions were held on finding ways to make India an ultimate tourist destination. Dr. Barai assured the minister of the robust support of the Chicago community in advancing his mission on development of tourism.

The parleys also included enhancement and improvement of tourism infrastructure at various tourist destinations. Alphons listed steps being taken for providing all the necessary tools, resources and funding to expand both domestic and international tourism in India.

He said his ministry is undertaking a massive campaign to promote tourism on various social media platforms, including the massive international “Incredible India” campaign that is eliciting remarkable response.

The minister was presented with a shawl by Dr. Barai, Bhushan, Ravoori, Shah and Patel to showcase a warm traditional Chicago welcome.

Aphons is an Indian civil servant from the 1979 batch of the Indian Administrative Service, Kerala cadre and was in Time Magazine’s list of 100 Young Global Leaders. He pioneered the literacy movement in India by making Kottayam the first 100% literate town of India in 1989. He later served as Commissioner of the Delhi Development Authority.
