Blackmail scam in St. Louis suburb

BUY-SELL | HELP WANTED | MATRIMONIAL

CHESTERFIELD, MO – The Chesterfield police are warning of a blackmail scam under which residents are asked to send money in order to keep their infidelities quiet.

Chesterfield residents are receiving letters in the mail stating that the sender knows that the resident cheated on their wife and demands the recipient to send money to keep the affair under wraps.

Back in January, the Creve Coeur Police also had received multiple reports of residents receiving such letters.

According to the police, the letter will often state, “I know you cheated on your wife” and “I have evidence of the infidelity.” The sender then gives the receiver an ultimatum to do nothing and allow their secret to get out or to send a certain monetary amount and they will destroy the evidence.

The scammers are demanding the payment be in cryptocurrency or other virtual currencies to make it difficult for the police to track the transactions.

The police are advising residents against sending money, and urged them to keep them informed.
