Melbourne, Aug 9: Australian golfer Jarrod Lyle passed away in Torquay on Thursday at the age of 36 years after a long battle with leukaemia.

Lyle, who had been diagnosed with leukaemia for a third time, had undergone several operations recently. As there had been no improvement, he decided to stop cancer treatment and begin palliative care, reports Efe.

The Australian played 121 PGA Tour tournaments during his professional career and won two, the Mexico Open and the Nashville Open, both in 2008.

The golfing community, including South Africa's Ernie Els, Britain's Tommy Fleetwood and American Justin Thomas, posted condolence messages on Twitter.

"We are very sad to hear of Jarrod Lyle's passing. He fought a good fight and will be forever remembered for his courage, strength, perseverance and the light he brought to all of our lives. The world lost a good man," Els posted on his Twitter account.
