WASHINGTON, DC- The Justice Department has emphasized its commitment to preventing, investigating, and prosecuting hate crimes in response to the FBI’s 2021 hate crime statistics supplement. While the shift to the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) for data collection resulted in decreased law enforcement agency participation in submitting hate crime data, the FBI accepted submissions from both NIBRS and summary reporting systems to compile a more complete report.

The Justice Department has taken various steps since January 2021 to address the rise in hate crimes, including aggressively investigating and prosecuting hate crimes, designating resources coordinators, hosting regional conferences, and launching an FBI-led National Anti-Hate Crimes Campaign. The department has also awarded over $32 million in grant funding to support law enforcement, victim assistance, and community organizations in their efforts to prevent and address hate crimes.
