After Messi Ends Title Jinx With Argentina, Kohli Fans Optimistic About ‘Apna Time Aayega’

Lionel Messi, arguably the greatest player to step on a football field, finally realised his long-held dream of winning silverware with Argentina.

The Barcelona legend’s long wait for a senior trophy with the national team came to an end as they defeated arch-rivals Brazil in the Copa America final at the iconic Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

With this win, Messi answered all his critics who used to question his legacy because he couldn’t replicate the same success that he had at the club level with the national team.

Deserved adulation for a man who was utterly astonishing at the @CopaAmerica

As wishes poured in from all corners, Messi started trending on the micro-blogging site across the globe.

Even the Indian cricket team fans congratulated the Argentine for ending his long wait for the senior trophy.

Before Messi, New Zealand cricketer Kane Williamson had also won his first trophy with the national team when they defeated India in the World Test Championship final in Southampton last month.

Watching Messi and Williamson end their title jinx, Virat Kohli’s fans were filled with optimism and they hoped that the Indian skipper would be the next player to lead their side to glory.

Messi knew he was nearing the end of his career and wouldn’t get many chances to realise his dream. He turned back the clock and single-handedly carried his team playing like a champion throughout the tournament, except the final.

He couldn’t get on the scoresheet in the final match but his four goals were enough for him to top the goal-scoring chart, along with two other players. The five goals he set up were the most by any player in the tournament.

While fans love to find similarities between two different situations, it is important to mention that Kohli, unlike Messi, has already won two trophies with the Indian team — the 2011 World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy — both under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.

Since taking over the reign from Dhoni, Kohli has failed to lay his hands on any major ICC trophy which has led to people doubting his leadership acumen.

Not just with the Indian team, Kohli has yet to win a trophy for his IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore, which has been his home since the inception of the tournament in 2008.

While Argentina’s title-drought lasted 28 long years, Messi had to wait more than 16 years to break the jinx with the national team.

Similarly, Williamson fell agonisingly short in the last two ODI World Cups but managed to get on the right side of the result this year as they became the first-ever World Test champions.

Could this all be an indication of what’s about to happen later this year, nobody knows, except Kohli fans who are optimistic that ‘Apna Time Aayega’ and they would see him end his title jinx later this year, either by lifting the IPL trophy with RCB or during the T20 World Cup.

The happiness in Messi’s eyes.
Greatness can be delayed but not denied. I believe Virat Kohli will also lift multiple ICC TROPHIES and that day the celebration of Virat will be something to watch. 🇮🇳
