Chicago (IL) — The Asian Human Services commends the Affordable Care Act (ACA–the health reform law) which was enacted on March 23, 2010 and took effect on October 1, 2013 and has proved to be a great victory in health care justice for American people.
The statistics show there is overwhelming support for this new health care reform initiative (Obamacare):
–Eight million Americans have signed up for private insurance through the health insurance marketplace.
–35% of those who have signed up are under the age of 35.
–313,000 Illinoisans have got covered (114,000 through the marketplace and 199,000 through Medicaid)
–5.6 million Illinoisans can no longer be denied coverage because they have pre-existing conditions
–1,843 consumers have enrolled in ACA at Asian Human Services with assistance of navigators.
These statistics didn’t include people who signed up for health insurance outside the Marketplace.
Not only the numbers, but numerous life stories of consumers who are covered under this law testify the impact this controversial legislation has on uninsured/underinsured people without protection medically and financially in meeting their health needs.
One consumer who lost her coverage as her son aged out of the All Kids Insurance System had no access to medical services when she needs to follow up on her brain exam and a second surgery to remove a brain tumor.
She was able to regain access to medical services by enrolling in the New Adult Medicaid and thus was relieved to be able to schedule the needed surgery that she has been waiting for.
A single mother who has a 23-year-old son in a mentally critical condition had no insurance to pay for hospitalization and medication to stabilize his condition. She was helped to sign up for the New Adult Medicaid so her son can receive medical attention that he needs.
These two stories are among many stories of how the ACA made a difference in people’s lives in this country. Although the Market Place open enrollment is ended, consumers can still apply for Medicaid, that healthcare coverage program for low-income individuals and families operated by the state.
It is all-year-round enrollment and requires for a proof of identity and residence and income proof.
