Kothagudem: In a big jolt to the banned CPI (Maoist) party as many as 52 militia members, village committees members and sympathisers have surrendered to police at Cherla in the district on Thursday.
There were seven minors and five women among those surrendered before Superintendent of Police (SP), Sunil Dutt and CRPF 141 Bn Commandant Hari Om Khare and they were all aged between 13 years to 40 years with majority of them in their teens.
Speaking to media persons the SP informed that the surrendered persons belong to Pusuguppa, Battigudem, Bathinapalli and Chennapuram villages of Cherla mandal. They have been providing logistics support to Maoists.
They were working for the Maoist Cherla Area Committee secretary Aruna for the past one year. Recently they were taken forcefully to attend Maoist training camps at Pesarlapadu, Puttapadu and Chanda area, SP said.
Dutt noted that the surrendered persons were frustrated with Maoist ideology, their harassment to provide ration and attend the training camps regularly, they decided to quit working for the Maoists and live a peaceful life.
He urged Maoist cadres and leaders to surrender with their weapons and join mainstream life in the interest of the common public and for the development of the area. Those who wish to surrender could approach the local police stations or through their relatives, he said. Bhadrachalam ASP, Dr. Vineeth G, CRPF second-in-command, Kamalbir Yadav, second-in-command, Pramad Suryabhan Pawar, Cherla Inspector of Police, B Ashok and others were present.
