Late Storms Prompted Cancelations of More Than 750 Flights in NYC Area Airports

NEW YORK CITY — Summer travelers’ plans hit massive turbulence if they planned to fly from New York City-area airports late this week.

More than 750 flights were canceled in the city’s three major airports Thursday and Friday, according to FlightAware.com.

Many passengers vented their frustration on Twitter as a chance of late storms Thursday prompted the wave of cancelations.

“Got to LaGuardia at five am after our flight yesterday got cancelled and they just sent us home and said yeah you’re not getting to Toronto this weekend,” @JamesFDennin tweeted Friday.

LaGuardia was the worst-hit by the cancelations, with 242 flights — or 40 percent of all flights — grounded Thursday, the flight tracker reported.

Newark wasn’t far behind, with 203 flights canceled, or 28 percent of all traffic, according to FlightAware.

JFK had 13 percent of its flights canceled as 102 failed to take off that day, the flight tracker reported.

The cancelations weren’t contained to New York City-area airports —airlines grounded roughly 1,500 flights in the U.S., according to the Associated Press.

And the woes continued into Friday.

Nearly 90 flights were canceled out of LaGuardia, according to FlightAware.

Still, some passengers managed to find a small silver lining — namely, a chance to admire newly renovated spaces in LaGuardia.
