Yadadri-Bhongir: When Indian Freestyle wrestler Bajrang Punia tweeted a picture of water body resembling India map with caption “Jai Hind” on January 9, it not only went viral but also became a subject of hot discussion with netizens vying with each other in expressing doubts over the photo. Many had opined that it could have been a photoshopped picture.
But be assured. It is not.
Punia’s tweet was picked up by the national media too and attracted over 56,000 likes so far. But not many know that the picture, in reality, went viral almost a year ago and yet the location of the water body remained a mystery. But this mystery is now unravelled by villagers in Yadadri Bhongir district in Telangana.
The water shape resembling India map was found near Nirnemula village of Ramannapet mandal in Yadadri-Bhongir district in Telangana state. A hill named Dubbaka gutta located almost 500 meters away from the water body on North side resembled the Himalayas.
The water shape was neither a water body nor an irrigation tank, but it was created when the Polkamma cheruvu (tank) of Nirnemula overflowed on August 23, 2020 and again in 2021 also. Nomula Praveen, a resident of Nirnemula village vouchsafes this. He told Telangana Today that the photo taken of the water shape had been shared extensively WhatsApp groups in 2020 and 2021 too. But Punia’s tweet went viral on Twitter.
The interesting India like water shape became a tourist spot locally after its photos were shared on WhatsApp groups and scores of people from nearby villages came to the spot to look at it and take photographs, Praveen recalls. Survi Sathish, another villager, was amused at the twitter comments saying that it resembled condition of bad roads. “This was a water formation that happened naturally”, he asserts.
People in nearby villages and many in the district are now experiencing the real power of social media, which made a local photograph a subject matter of intense discussion on social media. Such is its power.
