‘Hum Khud Hi Hai’ When Neeraj Chopra Refused To Call SRK His Inspiration With Great Swagger

Those who started following Neeraj Chopra after the Tokyo Olympics, might be deceived into believing that he became confident only after winning the historic gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

However, those who have been following him closely while he was rising through the ranks knew that confidence was the one thing that he always had in abundance. Winning the biggest honour on the planet has nothing to do with it.

If you don’t believe us, wait till you watch this old video, where he was asked about the inspiration behind his long hairstyle and his reply, which left everyone with a big smile.

Neeraj first came into prominence after he became the junior world champion with a world record throw of 86.84m in Poland. He surpassed the previous best throw of 84.69m set by Latvia’s Zigismunds Sirmais and became the first Indian track and field athlete to set a world record.

Back then, Neeraj used to sport a long hairstyle and apart from his incredible athletics skills, his good looks also added to his popularity, making him a household name.

The video we are talking about is from the Indian Sports Honours Awards where the anchor asks him about who was his inspiration for keeping long hair, among Ishant Sharma and Shah Rukh Khan.

It was the same interview where Neeraj had asked the anchor to ask him questions in Hindi so that he could understand them properly.

While giving him two options, the anchor would’ve thought he would pick one of the two names because that’s what any other young athlete would have done. That’s what we call playing safe.

But like we said, confidence was one thing that Neeraj had never lacked and it was clearly evident in the reply that he gave. Rather than picking a celebrity’s name, Neeraj proudly said none of them is his inspiration. He keeps long hair not because he was of someone but because he simply liked long hair.

“Nobody. I like keeping my hair long,” Neeraj replied as the whole auditorium burst out laughing.

Neeraj might have trimmed down his hair considerably but his confidence is still intact. With each passing year, he has only become even more confident and it reflects in how he conducts himself.

Praise and criticism are the two sides of the same coin and Neeraj lets neither of them dent his confidence. Ever since his golden triumph in Tokyo, Neeraj received praise and criticism in equal measures but he handled both of them with great maturity.

He didn’t let the praise get to his head too much and at the same time, didn’t hesitate in calling out people for using his name to turn the Pakistani javelin Arshad Nadeem into a villain and  “further their vested interests and propaganda”.

I would request everyone to please not use me and my comments as a medium to further your vested interests and propaganda.
Sports teaches us to be together and united. I’m extremely disappointed to see some of the reactions from the public on my recent comments.

There is a thin line between being confident and arrogant and Neeraj, certainly, is well aware of that.

Even when certain people made him uncomfortable during interviews by asking stupid questions, Neeraj never lost his cool and handled everything with a cool head and a broad smile.

He is the kind of role model that this country needs.
