Ever since the trailer of Bell Bottom released, the only thing that has been incessantly hitting the headlines is the incredible transformation of Lara Dutta, who is back on the big screen after a long hiatus, and is playing a role most actors would kill for – none other than erstwhile PM Indira Gandhi.
While the ex Miss Universe is famous for her stunning beauty as well as brains (just watch her speak in any interview) and usually plays glamorous characters, she admitted at the trailer launch that she agreed to play the part even before reading the script because of how iconic the character is.
There is, however, one happy coincidence that proved to be an unexpected advantage for Lara. Her father, retired Wing Commander L.K. Dutta, was Indira Gandhi’s personal pilot. That of course meant that he had flown her many times, and knew her better than most people. The actor said that her father proved to be a treasure trove of information when it came to how the Prime Minister carried herself, and her conduct away from the public eye.
“My father was amused and at the same time intrigued when he came to know that I was playing this character. He was closely associated with her so I got glimpses that weren’t in public knowledge. He has flown her many times and has interacted with her for many years. So he was like a treasure trove of reference as to what Ms. Gandhi was really like and how she carried herself and also the way she interacted with people. Like he told how Ms. Gandhi would manage her sari when she would climb into a helicopter or the way she would want to conduct her election rallies when she would fly from one destination to another. His assistance really allowed me to elevate my performance,” she said in an interview.
