Four days after former Chief Justice of India and Rajya Sabha MP Ranjan Gogoi reportedly said he liked to attend Rajya Sabha when he felt like and when he thought there were matters of importance on which he should speak, two TMC MPs on Monday submitted a notice to move a privilege motion against him over his remarks.
“The statements made by Gogoi prima facie constitute a breach of the Council (of states) as they undermine the dignity of the RS.” the notice sent by TMC MPs Jawhar Sircar and Mausam Noor stated.
The notice was yet to be admitted by the Rajya Sabha Secretariat, sources said, adding several other opposition MPs were also expected to file notices of privilege motion against the former CJI.
Justice Gogoi, who has been in the news over his autobiography ‘Justice for the Judge’, had recently told a TV channel in an interview that in the wake of Covid curbs and lack of social distancing, he liked to attend RS when he felt like and when he thought there were matters of importance on which he should speak.
The TMC duo filed the notice for privilege motion with Rajya Sabha Secretary General PC Mody over these remarks of Gogoi about attending Parliament.
To a question about joining the RS only after four months of his retirement as CJI, Justice Gogoi had said, “What is this magic about RS? I would have been better off in terms of pay, emoluments if I had been a chairman of a tribunal. I am not taking a penny from the RS.” — TNS
